Audition requirements

2023-2024 Auditions

Auditions for the 2023-2024 season will be held on Saturday, June 3, and Friday, June 16 in New Providence, NJ. The form to apply for an audition appointment will be open from April 1 to June 1 and can be found on our new website, NJYC.org.

In advance of your audition, you should prepare by looking through the requirements below and preparation aids for the NJYC ensemble you are auditioning. In addition to the ensemble specific requirements, auditionees may be asked to vocalize to check range, perform rhythmic and tonal repetition exercises, or partner sing in a canon or round.

Primo Coro

Girls entering grades 3 – 5

Auditionees will be asked to sing the following:

  • Major scale in D sung on solfege (melody syllables: do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do).
  • Happy Birthday in G
  • My Country ‘Tis of Thee (America) in G
  • One of the following, your choice: Row Row Row Your Boat, Skip to My Lou, This Old Man, or Twinkle Twinkle. You may start your selection on whichever pitch is comfortable for you.

Coro vivo

Boys with unchanged voices entering grades 3 – 8

Auditionees will be asked to sing the following:

  • Major scale in D sung on solfege (melody syllables: do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do).
  • Happy Birthday in G
  • My Country ‘Tis of Thee (America) in G
  • One of the following, your choice: Amazing GraceSimple Gifts, or The Water is Wide. You may start your selection on whichever pitch is comfortable for you.

Sola Voce

Girls entering grades 6-8

Auditionees will be asked to sing the following:

  • Major scales in D and F#, sung on solfege (melody syllables: do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do).
  • Jubilate Deo in C
  • One of the following, your choice: Ash Grove or Velvet Shoes. A low voice and high voice option are available for both selections, and sheet music and recordings can be found in the link below.

Camerata

Boys with changing and changed voices entering graders 7-12
Auditionees will be asked to sing the following:
  • Three major scales, sung on solfege (melody syllables: do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do) Low voices, sing G, C, and E Scales. High Voices, sing C, E, and A Scales.
  • Music Alone Shall Live in F
  • One of the following, your choice: Shenandoah, The Ash Grove, or Simple Gifts

Coriste

Girls entering grades 9-12

Auditionees will be asked to sing the following:

  • Three major scales, in B-flat, E-flat and A-flat, sung on solfege (melody syllables: do-re-mi-fa-sol-la-ti-do)
  • Now I Walk in Beauty in A-minor
  • One verse, a cappella, of ONE of the following: Ash Grove, Danny Boy, Greensleeves, Homeward Bound, Poor Wayfaring Stranger, or Shenandoah. You can also choose a piece from Twenty-Four Italian Songs and Arias or another classical piece
